The 2022/23 SailGP season has been announced and it couldn’t be more exciting. Kicking off in Bermuda in May, it will return to Plymouth for the second year running, for the 3rd Sail Grand Prix Event of the series.
After an incredibly successful event this year, with an estimated 27,500 spectators enjoying the thrilling race action on Plymouth Sound, the home of the UK’s first National Marine Park will once again provide the perfect stunning harbour setting for the spectacle that combines the top of the world’s sailing athletes, insanely fast F50s (World Sailing’s 2019 Boat of the Year), with the climate-positive SailGP programme that continues to push boundaries in its aims to reducing its carbon footprint.
This year’s event not only brought a huge economic boost to Britain’s Ocean City’s coffers, but also saw a successful partnership between Sail GP and the Ocean Conservation Trust, delivering a programme of education and engagement, further pushing the message of taking positive action to protect our planet. To use SailGP’s own quote: “Passion. Drama. Powered by Nature. SailGP is adrenaline racing for a better future.”
As part of SailGP’s better sport strategy, diversity and inclusion will also be a continued focus during Season 3. This includes giving opportunities to female athletes as part of its Women’s Pathway Program to accelerate inclusion within the sport and inspire change. SailGP will also use its community-engagement arm – SailGP Inspire – to introduce young people from diverse backgrounds to the sport and give career opportunities within the wider marine industry.
