Despite some unusually warm October weather, the turning of the leaves and shortening of the days indicate that we are well and truly into autumn.
Driving to the marina through the New Forest, we are treated to a dazzling display of colours – all the trees at different stages of their leaf-dropping journeys. The “Pannage Season” is in full swing and up to 600 pigs and piglets are allowed to roam the open forest, to eat fallen acorns and other nuts; green acorns in particular are poisonous to the New Forest ponies and cattle which roam the forest the majority of the year.
Out on the Solent the stunning sky provides a more changing backdrop than in summer – from beautifully broody and moody, to that crispy clean pale blue.
Sailing days tend to be a bit shorter – coming back in that little bit earlier, to a welcome warming drink at the many marina restaurants around the Solent. Needless to say, our crew will ensure the hands stay warm out on the water – with a steady supply of tea & coffee!
Going out on the Ribs, whether on a blast or a treasure hunt, is a firm favourite this time of year. The Solent is that little bit emptier, making you feel like you own it when you are flying down the middle. All the venues have their fires lit and make wonderfully cosy lunch stops.
The Ribs are so flexible – itineraries can usually be altered to accommodate weather changes, ensuring a fantastic day come what may. We provide full oilskins for everyone, keeping you dry and warm – you bring your hat and gloves if necessary – and sunglasses of course!
