10th September 2023, 15 classic sailing boats, 27,000 miles – no high-tech equipment
In September 1973, 17 yachts lefts Portsmouth for the Whitbread Race around the World. On its 50th anniversary, the 10th September 2023, 15 pre-1988, classic yachts will be starting from Southampton, on their version – the Ocean Globe Race.
Not returning until April 2024, they will round the world without the use of GPS or any other high-tech equipment – navigating their way past Cape of Good Hope and Cape Horn on charts and stars!
Over time, the Whitbread Race became the Volvo Race for elite sailors and The Ocean Race in foiling IMOCAs – but on the 10th of September “the original” is back.
One of our very own favourite marinas will be the start and finish port – Ocean Village Southampton. The Race Village will open on the 26th August, two weeks before the start. With fantastic facilities and of course the Southampton Harbour Hotel, it will be the place to be!
